Nervous About Your First Custom Airbrush? What to Expect

By Ohana Sun Tanning | July 23, 2026

Quick reassurance: a Custom Airbrush session is fast and private. We’ll match your shade, apply it evenly, then you’ll avoid water and sweat for 10 to 12 hours so it can fully develop.

First-time custom airbrush tan in Phoenix, what to expect at Ohana Sun Tanning

If you’re a little nervous about your first custom airbrush, you’re normal. Most first-timers are. One of the simplest reasons people relax once they walk in is trust. A client once lost a gold bracelet during the tanning process, and our team found it and returned it. That’s the vibe here: clean space, kind people, and we pay attention.

This guide walks you through prep, what to wear, what the appointment feels like, and exactly how to protect your tan in Phoenix heat and monsoon humidity. We’re in North Phoenix, in the Deer Valley area near Union Hills Drive and 32nd Street, and we see a lot of people popping in before events because it’s quick and private.

Airbrush tan prep that keeps the color even (24 to 48 hours ahead)

Your tan starts with your skin, not the solution. We’ll talk you through everything when you’re here, but these steps make a noticeable difference in how smooth your color develops and how evenly it fades.

  • Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours before so we’re spraying onto fresh, even skin. Skip oil-based body scrubs. If you want a product suggestion, Norvell Exfoliator shower gel is a favorite.
  • Shave before your session and give your skin time to calm down. A lot of people do it the day before.
  • Day-of: arrive clean and dry. No lotion, no makeup, no perfume, no deodorant. Also skip soap bars and use a basic body wash instead.
  • Remove jewelry before we start. (If you’re bringing valuables, we’ll help you keep track of them.)

And if you’ve had a bad spray tan in the past, you’re not alone. We hear it all the time, especially the “orange” fear. One client told us, “Gail definitely knows what she’s doing, every time I got a spray tan in the past I was glowing orange. But Gail knew what formula to use and definitely how to apply it.” That’s why we start with a quick consult before we spray.

Inside your Custom Airbrush appointment: private, guided, and quick

When you arrive, we’ll get you checked in and answer questions right away. People mention our team being welcoming and patient, and that’s exactly how we want your first visit to feel. Gail guides you the entire way, so you’re never standing there wondering what to do with your hands or how to turn.

Step 1: a quick consult so you don’t end up too dark, too light, or too warm

We’ll ask what you’re going for. Natural everyday glow. “Just back from vacation.” Or deeper event color. We’ll also ask about anything that matters to you, like where you tend to grab more color (hands, feet, knees), and what you’ve liked or hated about past spray tans. People tell us Gail “really listens to what you want, ” and that matters because one shade does not fit everyone.

Step 2: the application in a private space (and yes, you can keep your preferred tan lines)

Your tan happens in a private setup, and you choose what you’re comfortable wearing. Underwear or swimwear is totally up to you, based on the tan lines you want. During the spray, you’ll feel a cool mist and a little airflow as it dries. We’ll cue you through each position so you don’t have to guess.

Step 3: the last few minutes that protect your results

Before you head out, we’ll go over aftercare in plain language. A first-time visitor put it perfectly: “She talked me through all the different options and gave me thorough after care instructions. 10/10 recommend.” We’ll also remind you about the big rule: keep your skin dry and calm until your first shower.

“This was my first airbrush spray tan and it definitely won’t be my last.”

After your airbrush: shower timing, hands, and the “looks dark at first” moment

Right after your custom airbrush, the color can look a bit darker than you expected. That’s normal. You’re seeing cosmetic bronzers on the surface plus the color that’s still developing underneath. Once you do your first gentle shower, it settles into that more natural-looking glow.

Our non-negotiables for the first 12 hours

  • Wait at least 10 to 12 hours to shower, and next day is even better if you can swing it.
  • Avoid sweating or heavy physical activity until after that first shower.
  • Rinse your hands well 2 to 3 hours after (tops and bottoms). Then keep hands off your skin until your first shower.
  • Moisturize daily so your tan fades evenly and lasts longer. We like a tan extender, and Ohana Sun Care is a solid option.

A lot of our regulars rebook around when their tan is fading. One first-timer told us they’d be back “in 10 days or when my tan is gone.” That’s a realistic window for many people, especially if you’re moisturizing and keeping showers warm, not hot.

Phoenix heat tips: stop sweat before it ruins your Custom Airbrush

Phoenix weather is the biggest “gotcha” with a fresh tan. In July and during monsoon humidity, sweat can make a perfect spray develop unevenly. Here’s how we help you plan around it, especially if you’re coming from Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, or anywhere across Phoenix.

Pick early morning or evening. Less heat usually means less sweat on the drive home, which means a cleaner develop.

Plan indoor drying time. AC is your friend. After your appointment, head straight home and stay cool and dry.

Monsoon days need extra caution. If it’s humid, skip outdoor plans until after your first shower.

We’re easy to reach if you’re in North Phoenix and Deer Valley near Union Hills Drive and 32nd Street, and we’re also a quick hop off Loop 101. That makes it easier to plan your timing so you’re not sitting in afternoon traffic getting overheated right after your spray.

A few “we’ve done this for years” tips that make first-timers relax

We’ve been in Phoenix for 17 years, and the pattern is consistent. People come in nervous, then they realize it’s straightforward when someone’s actually guiding them. They also tell us they feel comfortable here. That’s not an accident. We keep the place clean, we answer questions without rushing you, and we take details seriously, including following up to make sure your color developed the way you wanted.

If you want the easiest first experience, bring loose dark clothing, flip-flops, and a towel for your car seat. The solution is water-soluble and washes out of most fabrics, but that towel removes the “what if” stress on the drive home.

If you’re planning to maintain your color: ask us about our 3-session and 5-session Custom Airbrush packages. They’re valid for one year, can’t be shared, and they make it easier to keep results consistent.

When you’re ready, call us with your event date and your “tan goal” and we’ll help you pick a timing that works with Phoenix heat. You can also reach us at +16025694624 or tan@ohanasuntanning.com. We’re right here at 3230 East Union Hills Drive, Suite 105, Phoenix, AZ 85050.

We recommend showering, shaving, and exfoliating before your session so we’re spraying onto smooth, even skin. Avoid oil-based scrubs, skip soap bars and use a basic body wash, and come in with no lotions, makeup, perfume, or deodorant on. Wear loose, dark clothing and flip-flops after your session, and remove all jewelry before we start.

Wait a minimum of 10 to 12 hours before your first shower, and next day is even better if you can. For that first shower, keep it gentle and warm, use a sulfate-free body wash, don’t scrub with a loofah, and pat dry. You’ll see cosmetic bronzers rinse off, and your tan will look natural once it settles.

It shouldn’t. We do a quick consultation first and Gail chooses a formula and shade designed to match your skin tone. If you’ve turned orange in the past, tell us. We’ll use that info to guide your color choice and application so it reads natural, not warm or artificial.

Hold off until after your first shower. We recommend avoiding sweating or heavy physical activity until you’ve waited at least 10 to 12 hours (ideally until the next day) so your tan can develop evenly.

Come in with loose-fitting, dark clothing and flip-flops or sandals for after your session. Tight clothes can rub or smudge while your tan is developing. Underwear or swimwear is up to you, depending on your comfort level and the tan lines you want.
